Can I use the femdisc with an IUD or copper IUD?Updated 16 hours ago
In general, yes – you can use the femdisc together with an IUD, and many femdisc users have an IUD and get along well with it 💛
The femdisc works well here because it doesn't create suction. That's exactly what sets it apart from menstrual cups and makes it more IUD-friendly in many cases.
What matters, though, is the size of the IUD and above all the length of the retrieval strings.
If you can feel the strings with your finger right at the opening of the cervix, it's better not to use the femdisc.
The good news: your doctor can trim the retrieval strings. That can help lower the risk of infections or accidentally tugging on the IUD.
A look at MAUDE, an online database for adverse-event reports from FDA-registered companies, shows that over the past 20 years there were no reported cases of IUD expulsion caused by menstrual discs (including the femdisc).
That doesn't mean it can never happen – the database relies on voluntary reports from the brands. What stands out, though, is that IUD expulsions were reported far more often in connection with menstrual cups.
Even so: every body is different. So we recommend talking with your doctor before using it with an IUD. They can best assess how your IUD is positioned and whether the femdisc is a good option for you ✨
