Why do I leak when I sneeze, cough, or exercise?Updated 16 hours ago
If your femdisc empties during exercise, squats, weightlifting, coughing, or sneezing, that's not hands-free emptying, that's leaking.
Hands-free emptying only happens when you use the toilet. That's when very specific pelvic floor muscles relax, the ones used specifically for peeing or having a bowel movement.
These muscles aren't relaxed during movement, exercise, or coughing – so the disc should actually stay securely in place then.
If leaking still happens, it's usually because the femdisc isn't sitting correctly or the size isn't quite right. If the disc is too big, it can be under tension. If it's too small, it sits too loosely. In both cases, it can come loose from the pubic bone during certain movements or muscle contractions.
How to check the fit of your femdisc:
1. Find your cervix
Gently feel inside the vaginal opening for your cervix with a clean finger. You should feel a small, smooth circle – it feels a little like pursed lips.
2. Reinsert the disc
Sit all the way down or go into a squat – this moves your cervix closer to the vaginal opening.
Insert the femdisc and use a finger to check that it fully covers your cervix. The back rim of the disc needs to sit behind your cervix.
3. Position the front rim correctly
Then gently push the front rim of the disc up until it sits above the pubic bone – straight and without a kink ✨
When the femdisc is sitting correctly and is the right size, it should stay securely in place during movement, exercise, or coughing 💛
Once you've made sure the disc is sitting well in the back, please push the front rim up properly until it sits straight above the pubic bone without a kink.
